CURRENT CLUB INFORMATION

The upper grade Name That Book Club for students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will meet every Tuesday afternoon from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the library beginning in September. Our librarian will sponsor the team with parent volunteer coaches Amy Barnes and Andy Chan.  Fifth grade teacher Maureen Pflugfelder and third grade teacher Kelly Russell are our special teacher volunteer coaches.  Team members are required to read a list of 35 books for the purpose of competing against 85 other HISD school teams who have also read the same books. Calling all readers!!  We are looking for enthusiastic students who are willing to make a LARGE commitment to reading.  It really helps to begin reading these books during the summer!  The final competition team consisting of six students and an alternate will be selected in the spring 2011 by our coaches based upon student attendance, Accelerated Reader scores, book knowledge, preparation, and personal commitment.

2010 CONTEST RESULTS

Last year 26 students joined our 2009-2010 Name-That-Book Club for grades 3-5 during the 2000-2010 school year.  They met every Tuesday after school in the library from 3:00 to 4:00 September to March to discuss the 35 books and to prepare for the contest.  The actual competition team of 6 students and two alternates was selected in the spring.  The 2010 contest took place on March 29th with 9 preliminary elimination rounds scheduled at the Library Dept. .  

West University Elementary's 3-5 Name That Book Team tied for first place with Walnut Bend Elementary in the preliminary round of the competition!  However, only one team was permitted to advance to the finals.  So after an additional "sudden death" round of questions, Walnut Bend Elementary was declared the First Place winner and our team was declared the Second Place winner. At the final round of the competition on April 1st,  Roberts Elementary tied for first place with Horn Elementary.  After a "sudden death" round of question, Roberts Elementary was then declared the winner and Horn Elementary was given Second Place. 

The 2010 team members were:  Luke Wuthrich (5th grade and team captain), Isabella Smith (5th grade), Cameron Chan (5th grade), Amelia Price (5th grade), Gracie Jing (4th grade), Olivia Zhang (4th grade), plus alternates Kendall Barnes (4th grade) and Laura Tan (4th grade). Congratulations to all for their hard work and dedication to this contest effort!!!

Name That Book Club Kindergarten through 2nd grade

CURRENT CLUB INFORMATION

This year our librarian will sponsor the K-2 Name That Book team with parent volunteer coaches, Cindy Burnett and Annie Marshall.  Club members are required to read a list of 30 books  (or have the books read to them) in advance for the purpose of competing against other HISD school teams who have also read the same books. It really helps to begin reading these books during the summer months!  The list of books can be found at: http://www.hisdlibraryservices.org/NTBK-2.html 

The actual competition team of six students and an alternate will be selected based primarily upon a written test to be administered right after the winter holiday break.

The selected team members will begin meeting in January after school on Monday afternoons in the library to prepare for the contest.  Students teams from approximately 80 other HISD schools will gather to participate in the final event which is scheduled to take place in early February at the HISD Library Services Dept..

2010 CONTEST RESULTS

On February 23, 2010, West University Elementary's K-2 Name That Book Team won fourth place in the preliminary round of the HISD Library Services annual reading competition!  We are proud of our students for their great effort and tremendous preparation.

The 2010 selected team members are:  Gracie Marshall (2nd Grade and Team Captain), Pratik Pohuja (2nd Grade), Emily Burnett (1st Grade), Peyton Richardson (1st Grade), Sammy Sarlin (1st Grade), and Matthew Aguilar Schnitzer (1st Grade).  The team alternate was Christina Betti (2nd grade).

2009 CONTEST RESULTS

On April 14, 2009, West University Elementary's K-2 Name That Book Team won first place in the preliminary round of the HISD Library Services annual reading competition!  On April17, 2009, in the final round of the competition, West University Elementary's team  was declared the first place district winner!!!.  T. H. Rogers Elementary came in 2nd place, followed by  R.K. Daily Elementary in 3rd place.  Congratulations to all for their hard work and continued dedication to this contest effort!!!

West University Elementary's K-2 Name That Book Team won first place in both the preliminary round and the district final round of the HISD Library Services annual reading competition!!!  It was the first year West U had entered a team in the youngest division of the contest!  Congratulations to all for their great effort!!!
